Eiyan of Kriev (formerly, Ranyevik Czhelor)

Appearance: Eiyan is about 6'1" tall, a touch too thin, with long pitch black hair and eyes (irises only). His apparent age is about 30 years old, though he's over 300 (312).

He keeps his hair either tied back or loose, depending upon what he's doing. He generally looks a bit sickly; pale with dark circles under his eyes. He usually wears modest robe-like clothing, and as an author, wears ink guards - separate black sleeve attachments shaped slightly triangular from the wrist to elbow that protects clothing from ink, and also serve as a kind of small pocket. He also wears a medallion on a chain, but it's usually under his clothing.

History:
Note: The world setting is similar to a traditional fantasy novel.

Eiyan was born about 300 years ago, as a second son of the noble Czhelor family, named Ranyevik, in the Ceber's capital, Kriev. He lived there with his family - mother, father, one older brother, and two younger twin sisters.

As traditional in Ceber due to its overly dense population, any sons born after the first must not marry or have relations with a woman, both to keep the population within a manageable level, and also to ensure direct lines of succession among noble houses. It is also customary for the second son to apprentice to become an author (a type of religious leader.)

Authors (as well as other authorists) believe in The Grand Author (or The Grand, for short), a sort of deity that is creating the massive story that is life. This includes gifting the people with writing and abstract thought, and visits from people known as "Travelers" which come from various other worlds. (More on authorism and Travelers available upon request.)

Eiyan was apprenticed to his uncle, an author, and became one himself after he completed his first autobiography at age 22.

While second born sons are not permitted to marry or involve themselves with a woman, it is permissible to enter into a bond with another man if they so desire it. Eiyan fell in love with and bonded to a man named Preyuri Zhivoy at the age of 24.

A childhood friend Gorodny, married to a Traveler woman named Helena. Long story short - Eiyan and Helena had an affair. (Eiyan age 28) By doing so, Eiyan broke both the law and his bond with Preyuri. After they were found out by her husband, Helena, fearful for her safety, found a way to return to her world via exploring Gorodny's laboratory.

A few days after her disappearance, Eiyan fell ill with an unknown disease which symptoms include fever, joint pain, and coughing up a black slime. It also strangely stops/severely slows the aging process if one recovers from it. He did recover, but was left weakened with reoccurring bouts of the illness surfacing now and then. The illness had also turned his hair and eyes a deep black. These features, along with the black substance, came to give the plague it's name - The Black. (As a side note, after a person's eyes turn black completely, and the hair begins to grow out black, they are no longer contagious. - He was also formerly blond and blue-eyed.)

The Black spread through the city quickly, and within a matter of years, the continent of Ceber as a whole. Cities were quarantined, burned, or largely abandoned as the population declined. Eiyan left the nearly-dead continent of Ceber along with other survivors and found a new home in the country Renjord where he has been living out his abnormally extended life in the town of Husset.

After leaving Ceber, he changed his name from Ranyevik Czhelor to Eiyan of Kriev in order to humble himself. The naming pattern is more in line with Ceberi commoners.
He earned his title of master scribe while studying in the country Renjord, with the specialty of working with Travelers. He has had five apprentices since, the fifth of with is Tillens (Tilly for short), an 11 year old boy who currently lives with him and Dythear (An older author, former apprentice, age 92) in the library of the town Husset, where he has many friends and acquaintances.

Personality:
Eiyan is a gentle and humble man, though he was not always so in his youth. Along the way, he has learned some hard lessons, and re-evaluated his role in society as an author and as a person. He's come from being a care free, entitled noble who wanted nothing more but parties and pleasure out of life, to one who cares about others greatly and endeavors to help them make the right choices.

Because of his behavior when he was younger, which led to some horrible events, he feels it is his duty to teach others to pay more attention to their actions and consequences. The best way to do this as an authorist is to remember to read and learn from others' recorded experiences to find the right course of action.

However, in his attempt to avoid repeating his past mistakes, he tends to be overly cautious. He feels that recklessness was part of what led to his behavior, and as such, may over-think his choices and avoid potentially good experiences.

He enjoys reading, practicing fancier calligraphy when he can, listening to people talk about themselves, and being social. Whether it's a few friends sitting by a warm fire and talking quietly or something more energetic like a celebration with song and dance, he enjoys being around people. Due to the limitations of his body and the fact that he is sometimes too hesitant, he sometimes misses out on things he would otherwise want to do.

Listening to the stories of others is both interesting and important in his line of work. Eiyan has always been very curious about Travelers, so much so that he specializes in recording the stories of Travelers to preserve them for history. (He is probably going to go into author overdrive when he arrives!)

Despite being interested in other people's stories and experiences, he hesitates to share his own. Bringing up the past makes him remember his past mistakes, which causes him a deep feeling of shame.

He has always felt that he was responsible for the illness spreading through Ceber and nearly killing off his people. Not only was he the first to get sick, but it also seemed possible that The Grand Author was "revising the story" to correct Eiyan's wrongdoing. This belief occasionally brings about a certain melancholy when he is alone with his thoughts, but for the most part he tries to keep himself distracted with his work.

He endeavors to be helpful. People who are suffering, either mentally or physically, tug at his heartstrings, and he does his best to console them and provide a listening ear. Offering advice based upon his readings is a normal part of the author's job description.

Eiyan isn't afraid to change his mind over minor things or admit that he was wrong - authorists believe there is always new information, every second of every day, that might cause a change in view, and it should be accepted. However, deep-seated beliefs such as those regarding his religion, wouldn't be easily shaken.

Abilities:
As a master scribe, Eiyan is an expert at calligraphy and writing, as well as talented with illustrations and reproducing near-exact copies of almost anything on paper that can be reproduced by quill and ink. Of course, since he often has pain and stiffness in his joints, his work deteriorates the more his hands are hurting.

Book binding, paper, quill, and ink making are also some things in which he has a strong foundation.
